Chapter 1088 - 841 Ancient Legends
And the biggest problem was, he had no idea who it could be. In his memory, there was no one with such ability.
Of course, plenty of people he knew possessed magic, but the thing was, this wasn’t magic.
After the quarry turned into a magma lake, the next piece of news was about the gold.
The massive amount of gold that was stored in the warehouse had vanished without a trace overnight! The guards at the door cursed and swore that they only went out to check a noise for less than two minutes. By the time they returned, the warehouse doors had been violently shattered, and all the gold inside was gone!
This was unreasonable! Absolutely unreasonable! It looked more like it had been hidden away in a private space, but no one’s private space could hold so much stuff!
Damn it! Who could it be! Could it be the Emperor?
Fuming with anger, Kabein went to the location where the Emperor was under house arrest and inquired with the guards at the door, who told him that the Emperor had not left the place by even half a step, and certainly no one dared to go in.
Strange!
Really strange!
In the end, Kabein decided to probe the Emperor’s attitude, wanting to see if the Emperor knew anything.
Unexpectedly, as soon as he had brought up the matter, the Emperor immediately nodded and told Kabein that he knew what was going on.
"You know?" Kabein hadn’t expected the matter to be resolved so quickly.
"Yes, I know, because this has to do with a legend of our Empire, no, I should say our planet," the Emperor said, nodding.
"A legend? What legend?" Kabein pressed.
"The legend says that our planet wasn’t originally created but formed when a Giant’s golden Golem, destroyed by the Dragon Clan, absorbed cosmic dust and asteroids on its own. The Planet’s gold purportedly all came from it, and it awakens periodically to check if there’s anything wrong with the planet. When it detects significant geological disturbances, it intervenes to stop them. And it does not permit the theft of its gold—if the gold leaves the planet, it would not pursue, but if it remains on the planet, it would take it back."
Kabein frowned slightly, his instincts telling him not to believe the Emperor’s words, but now it seemed he had no other choice but to believe.
"Is this true?" Kabein asked.
"Whether it’s true I don’t know, after all, it’s a legend, and we’ve never encountered anything like it. If you hadn’t brought it up, I would’ve almost forgotten this legend," said the Emperor with the confidence of someone telling a blatant lie, of course, made up by Long Yi.
But Kabein didn’t know that.
He left silently, yet another matter took over his mind.
A Giant’s damaged Golem?
The war between the Giants and the Dragon Clan had spanned three great Planes—who didn’t know that the Golems created by the Giants were outright war machines, slaughtering innumerable Dragons! And now, there was a Golem hiding within this planet?
Putting aside other considerations, if he could find this Golem, the credit he would receive...
No, he first needed to verify the truth of this matter!
And to investigate such a thing, it wouldn’t do to simply ask around on the streets.
Kabein headed straight to the Imperial Library, which housed all the books collected since the foundation of the Empire. There were special Arrays responsible for protecting the books, maintaining the appropriate humidity and temperature to prevent mildew and pests.
Naturally, no one dared to stop Kabein upon his arrival. He browsed through the shelves and finally reached the section on historical legends.
One book.
Nothing.
Two books?
Nothing.
But Kabein was patient. He knew such legends were diverse and might be tucked away in some corner.
Aha! Lucky!
In the third book, Kabein found the information he wanted. It was a purely handwritten manuscript, seemingly untouched since it had been placed on this shelf.
Kabein quickly skimmed it. Besides some content matching what the Emperor had said, there was even a map drawn within. It detailed how once a fabulously wealthy man led a group of powerhouses in search of the Golem from the legend. And they actually found traces of the Golem! At the location on the map, they spent years digging out a tunnel, but on the date the tunnel was completed, the entire team disappeared, save for a child.
A child?
If this kid were alive today, he’d surely be long dead, but perhaps he still had relatives, right?
Kabein pocketed the book and immediately returned, then issued orders to mobilize all resources to find this child and his family.
A few days later, news came that the child of those times was dead, but he left behind a grandson, who was a professional treasure hunter. Recently, it was heard that he had gone off exploring a treasure that "shocked the entire Plane."
Upon learning this news, Kabein barely slept that night. The following day, he took his subordinates and set off in pursuit.
On the other side of the planet, Kabein finally found the terrain that matched the map exactly, and quickly discovered the entrance marked on the map, where a series of tents were set up outside.
As Kabein and his company descended, they landed and some people emerged from the tents, clearly bearing injuries, most of which were burns.
"Who among you is Nordwich?" Kabein asked loudly.
An old man stepped forward amidst the holy Halo aura, "Lords, I am Nordwich."
Kabein looked him over; the age seemed right, and the appearance was similar.
"What are you doing here?" Kabein inquired.
A troubled expression crossed Nordwich’s face, he seemed reluctant to speak.
"Speak plainly or you should know the consequences of deceiving the Ancient Mage Tower," Kabein said sternly.
Immediately, Nordwich bowed deeply, "Actually, we came here to search for Golems."
It turned out that Nordwich had been unaware of such an astonishing legacy in his family; his grandfather had apparently discovered the location of the legendary Golems and was the sole survivor. It was only recently, while studying his grandfather’s diaries, that he learned of this and so had pooled all his family wealth to form this expedition, hoping to find the Golems.
"And the result? Did you find said Golems?"
Kabein asked, suppressing the nervousness in his heart.
"No, our strength is inadequate; we do not even possess the means to cross the Golden River," Nordwich said dejectedly.
"Oh? It so happens we are quite interested in this matter too. How about I offer you our help?" The gleam in Kabein’s eyes was hard to miss.
"It would be ideal to have the help of such powerful lords... however..." Nordwich hesitated, "are only a few of you lords coming?"
"What, are we not enough?" Kabein asked displeased.
"No, no, that’s not what I mean. But according to my grandfather’s diary, to pass through that series of challenges, over a hundred powerful Sanctuary individuals might be able, and over two hundred could ensure safety. The more, the better."
While saying this, Nordwich handed over a very worn notebook, its pages yellowed. Indeed, on the page that was opened, it was written as such.
"In that case, what are you doing here?" Kabein laughed.
"Well, I thought perhaps those challenges had expired, and we came to try our luck. You’ve seen the outcome," Nordwich admitted.
Kabein surveyed the surroundings, the explorers all bore burn injuries.
Kabein burst into loud laughter, "Alright! Lead the way! I want to see just what kind of impressive challenges would need so many strong individuals from the Sanctuary!"
Nordwich dared not refuse and quickly prepared some food and water, leading Kabein into a nearby cave.
"It’s a long way down from here, wouldn’t you lords want to prepare some food?" Nordwich asked.
"Hahaha!" A mage from the Ancient Mage Tower laughed loudly, "Truly befitting foolish surface dwellers. Do you not know that wherever we go, we fly?"
As he spoke, the Mage attempted to cast a flight spell and take off, but as soon as he jumped up, the spell failed instantly, and he fell heavily to the ground.
"That, uh, I forgot to tell you lords, once inside the cave, no flying or teleportation Magic can be used. Flying magic will lead to falling, and if teleportation fails, it can be deadly!"
The fallen mage, unprepared for the fall, had scraped off half of his face. His colleagues, to save face in front of others, refrained from laughter, but by the looks on their faces, they were barely holding it in.
"Let us know earlier next time about any situations! If you injure one of our esteemed Mage Tower members, you cannot afford the liability!"
Kabein spoke coldly, and Nordwich repeatedly assured him, promising to call it out in advance next time.
Just as Nordwich had described, the path downwards was exceedingly long. According to their timekeeping devices, they had been walking for the better part of the day, yet the road ahead seemed endless. Everyone was continuously walking downwards, yet the air remained fresh, without any feeling of stuffiness.
"This is a very miraculous aspect, as there’s always an influx of fresh air. My grandfather speculated in his diary that, despite the Golems being the creation of Giants and war machines born to counter the Dragon Clan, they instinctively protect us innocents," Nordwich explained.
Kabein flipped through Nordwich’s grandfather’s diary, finding the relevant content.
"How long will we have to walk like this?" asked a weary Ancient Mage Tower mage, being a mage, he didn’t have the physical endurance for long treks.
"Around two days. We’ll come across a small station that has been cleared out where we’ll rest for one night. Then, we’ll continue on tomorrow," Nordwich said.
"Rest? Do we have that much time?" the Mage said, frowning.
A wry smile spread across Nordwich’s face, "The lords from the Ancient Mage Tower are powerhouses; it’s nothing for you to stay awake for a day or two. But I’m just a decrepit old man who has just come up from down there not long ago, and now has to go back down. There are numerous traps below, and if something were to happen..."
"Alright, alright! You know your way around here, so we’ll do as you say!" Kabein stared fiercely at the Mage, who immediately shrank back without further comment.(To be continued.
