Chapter 67 - 59: Challenging the Magic Tutor
A master of both magic and martial arts!
Everyone was dumbfounded.
This hulking bastard was proficient in both magic and martial arts!
Though the magic missile was immense and launched clumsily, presumably due to a lack of familiarity with the technique, it was enough to confirm that the man standing before them was not an ordinary brawn-over-brains Dragon Warrior, but a dual cultivator majoring in Dragon Aura and minoring in magic!
The Mage Instructor fully understood what this dual cultivation symbolized—it was the coexistence of two largely incompatible forces, capable of switching as freely as one wanted. But the effort it took to achieve such a balance was unimaginable!
Upon realizing this, the Mage Instructor harbored a newfound respect for Long Yi. Controversial as he may be, he was indeed a future force to be reckoned with in the Empire. Considering that he was only a second-year student, who knows what he was capable of achieving in the future!
"Damn it!"
The jubilant Mage Instructor instantly noticed something amiss. This magic missile was peculiar! An ordinary magic missile, even if launched by a master mage, would be no bigger than a bowl. But Long Yi’s was the size of a basin, and it was filled with intense Dragon Breath! This wasn’t a simple magic missile—it was a compounded magic! How did this bratty kid learn to use compound magic?
However, the Mage Instructor didn’t have time to ponder. With fluid motions of his arms, his Mana surged.
"Ethereal Light Shield!"
In an instant, a massive shield emerged before Lai Ze. The next moment, fire erupted from the sky. The deafening blast, the thick smoke, and the brilliant flames filled everyone’s sight. The only thing the Mage Instructor could hear was a sound like shattering glass — the sound of his light shield being broken by a mere magic missile!
Who is this monster, from where did he spring up? The shield that he hastily put together was able to withstand up to ten spell impacts! And the spell that Long Yi launched was at most a mere level seven spell, how could it have shattered his light shield so easily?
Amidst the smoke and fire, Lai Ze gently descended. Although he felt a little woozy, he wasn’t directly hit, so he wasn’t badly injured. Just as the Mage Instructor was about to concede, he saw Long Yi raise his Dragon-slaying Sword high in the air, ready to make his next move.
He fully activated his level seven Dragon Aura!
"Sword Qi Slash!"
Swish!
A gigantic Sword Qi, several meters tall, charged directly at Lai Ze!
This time, the Mage Instructor was too late to react. The Sword Qi was much faster than any magic spell.
The Sword Qi, as thick as Lai Ze’s body, struck him squarely, almost instantly shredding his clothes to pieces and mutilating the skin that faced the Sword Qi.
Luckily, it hit him in the back.
Long Yi lowered his sword, turned to the Mage Instructor, and said to the referee,
"Second-year student, Long Yi challenges the second-year Mage Instructor!!"
This announcement from Long Yi caused an uproar among the crowd.
Had Long Yi gone mad? Just after defeating Lai Ze, was Long Yi now challenging the Mage Instructor? Not to mention anything else, a random spell or two from the Mage Instructor would be enough to send Long Yi off balance!
The referee was also surprised, but did not stop him. He was keen to see how far this fellow could go.
"Given the Mage Instructor just disrupted a fair duel, I agree to Long Yi’s challenge! Also, the Mage Instructor should limit his Mana to the seventh level!" the referee declared.
"No need, let him use his full strength. If I lose, I’m a sissy!" said Long Yi, glaring at the Mage Instructor.
The Mage Instructor, dubbed a "sissy", despised being called as such. This taunt provoked a smirk from him.
"Rest assured, you don’t need to provoke me. Dueling is it? Very well, I’ll indulge you. I’ll limit my power to the seventh level. If I use a second spell after the Magic Missile, consider it my loss!"
Lai Ze, his most beloved and humble disciple, had been beaten to a pulp by Long Yi. The injury was not only physical but also a loss of dignity in front of the crowd. The Mage Instructor was a little out of himself due to Long Yi’s antagonism, thus, he abandoned his composure and stepped up to the battlefield without further consideration.
"Shall we get changed, young lad?"
Addressing Long Yi as "young lad", the Mage Instructor didn’t make any verbal obstructions, but held a slight respect for him and didn’t impose his authority on him.
"Young?" Long Yi burst out laughing, "Teacher, aside from age, what part of you is bigger than me?"
Whoosh-
The surrounding crowd stirred. The male students who were initially displeased with Long Yi somehow accepted him as the unspoken boss. They felt somewhat inferior and silently accepted Long Yi’s preeminence.
The female students covered their eyes, all except for Ai Lin, who was wide-eyed but with a blank stare, as if she had seen or thought of something unfathomable.
Long Yi’s words deeply provoked the Mage Mentor. The usually gentlemanly mentor inexplicably lost his temper! You little rascal, all the bit of good impression I just had of you is gone! No matter, let me teach you a lesson today, to save you from dying on the battlefield in the future!
"Magic Missile!"
With a word in the draconic language, Magic Missiles appeared out of thin air.
Not just one, but several dozens!
That’s what terrifying about a Mage Mentor - just a single sentence could bring about unprecedented destructive power!
"Dragon Breath Armor!"
Roar!
Bajie, who had been accumulating dragon breath for a while, spewed it out, covering him like a burning armor. Long Yi at this moment was like a god bathed in fire, rushing towards the Mage Mentor under the protection of the raging flames!
Seeing Long Yi’s movements, the Mage Mentor quickly retreated as the Magic Missiles flowed continuously without a break!
Dragon Breath Armor is essentially Dragon Breath, which contains a high concentration of Dragon Power. Due to the very nature of magic being another manifestation of Dragon Power, using dragon breath to fend it off couldn’t be more suitable.
The Mage Mentor was initially quite confident, thinking that Long Yi wouldn’t last too long under such an intense bombardment from his Magic Missiles.
After all, Long Yi had just defeated several students from the Air Force Division, followed by a battle with Lai Ze where he withstood almost all of Lai Ze’s Magic Missiles and a powerful Dragon Flame Impact. Now, even with the so-called Dragon Breath Armor, he definitely shouldn’t have been able to withstand much more.
Yet intriguingly, Long Yi kept circling around the Mage Mentor in the arena. Though he wasn’t getting closer, neither was he stepping back. The Mage Mentor’s Magic Missiles were bombarding Long Yi relentlessly, and his nerves started to grow increasingly tense.
The biggest weakness of mages is their lack of sustained combat power. They are typically ones to unleash all their strength in an instant and then retreat. Be it a mentor or a powerful archmage, all are the same.
And that’s the situation the Mage Mentor found himself in now. Even though his Mana storage far surpassed that of Lai Ze, his output speed was even more tremendous. With that said, his duration of maintaining his spells might not be longer than Lai Ze’s.
Damnit!
The Mage Mentor paused momentarily. His hands swiftly came together, and the Magic Missiles still in the sky abruptly clustered together and rushed towards Long Yi!
With a thunderous explosion, Long Yi was blasted away, and the Dragon Breath Armor was shattered!
Hahaha! Let’s do it again!
Finally, the Mage Mentor realized that although Long Yi was elusive, he had already reached his limits!
In a blink of an eye, the sky was filled with more Magic Missiles. Before Long Yi could land, more Magic Missiles had already arrived!
After the explosion, a cloud of debris kicked up in the air. This time, the upper half of Long Yi’s Dragon Breath Armor was entirely shattered. Luckily, the lower half remained intact, sparing him from the embarrassment of being undressed again.
"This time, I’d like to see how you defend!"
But then, in the next moment, the Mage Mentor’s jaw hit the floor. Long Yi was also moving his hands rapidly, and a surge of magical power emerged.
"Ethereal Light Shield!"
Boom, the enormous light shield blocked all the Magic Missiles, disintegrating them as it itself crumbled!
"You, you, you..." The Mage Mentor stuttered, utterly at a loss for words. When did this brat learn to use the Ethereal Light Shield? Wasn’t it just a while ago that he skipped up to the Second Year from the First? It was his first day as a Second Year student, right? So, why could he use Sword Qi Slash? Why could he use a spell with Magic Missiles? Why could he use Ethereal Light Shield?
Long Yi gave him no explanation. Instead, he already charged forward!
The Mage Mentor instinctively cast a light wind spell on his legs, intending to retreat. But Long Yi was faster, closing the gap in only two steps.
"I concede!"
The Mage Mentor let out a shout as the gust of wind from the narrowly missed kick grazed his face, stinging as it passed.
"Tsk."
Long Yi looked at the Mage Mentor with some regret. He had planned to kick him in the face no matter what, but he underestimated the power of a Mage Mentor. Just a moment ago, the mentor had not only cast a second spell, he had also unlocked all his levels of magic.
Still, he barely managed to evade the kick. Now the Mage Mentor was certain that if that kick had landed, his life would have been in serious jeopardy.
All the Second Year students were flabbergasted.
This Long Yi... actually won!
